00:45 Hello and welcome to "Health for a Lifetime"
00:47 I'm your host Don Mackintosh,
00:49 and today, I'm delighted to be in the studio with
00:51 Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus
00:53 Welcome Dr. McNeilus!
00:55 Now you're a medical doctor; you've been trained
00:57 in pediatrics, and you've done oncology.
01:01 You've done hematology, and then you have a
01:04 degree also, I believe, in microbiology...
01:06 And family medicine... and family medicine!
01:09 So with all these different things, you've come to
01:13 a rather startling conclusion to some, but really a
01:16 refreshing conclusion that some of the most POWERFUL
01:19 means of HEALING people are some of the SIMPLEST means.
01:23 And, I like what you've entitled your book...
01:26 It's called "God's Healing Way"
01:28 and it's really focusing on those simple remedies.
01:33 I like the way it's outlined too with the different health laws,
01:36 and then practical treatments, and then ending, of course,
01:39 with turning once again to the most powerful Healer,
01:43 that would be God.
01:45 Today we're going to be talking about some home remedies,
01:48 and you have some real strong convictions about
01:53 why we should talk about what we're going to talk about today.
01:56 Thank you Don, it's a pleasure
01:59 for me to be here with you today.
02:03 I would like to share just briefly at the beginning
02:07 of our talk, of how God's healing is available today.
02:15 What are the conditions for healing?
02:18 Are they any different than they've ever been before?
02:22 What are some of the Biblical principles?
02:25 And, certainly when we look at healing, we recognize that
02:29 faith is essential.
02:31 In Matthew 9:22, Jesus said to an individual that He healed,
02:39 "Thy faith hath made thee whole"
02:42 In other words, your faith has made you well.
02:46 However, sometimes we forget that obedience to God's laws,
02:52 or His commands, are also necessary for optimal healing.
02:58 John 14:15 reminds us of this...
03:04 It says, "If you love Me, KEEP my commands. "
03:09 "My commands" are His laws.
03:11 His laws of not only his moral laws, His laws of physiology...
03:17 His laws of good health are also included in God's commands.
03:23 Okay, so we really all have the opportunity of receiving
03:28 that gift of the Spirit... which is faith
03:30 The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, longsuffering
03:33 faithfulness... And what you're suggesting
03:35 is then that obedience is a fruit of faith.
03:37 It comes right out of it, and we can kind of know
03:39 whether or not we're in that relationship with Jesus
03:42 by whether or not we have that fruit in our life of obedience.
03:45 Now, you know, let's just role-play
03:49 I guess, with a couple of things...
03:51 You have a few things that you want to show us here
03:53 that are very practical approaches to dealing with
03:55 disease, or discomfort.
03:57 Maybe, what's the first thing we want to talk about here
04:00 of ALL the different options we have.
04:02 Today, I would like to talk about "fomentations"
04:06 What are fomentations?
04:08 They are applying a hot and cold to a body area...
04:14 often using a towel, or a similar large cloth to a
04:19 particular body area.
04:21 Okay, so for what reason... just because you want that
04:26 particular area to have treatment...
04:28 I suppose it would be an area that you can't submerge.
04:32 That's right, and this is why if you have an illness,
04:37 or an infection in a hand or foot, you can submerge it
04:40 into the hot and cold water such as with the hot and cold
04:44 contrast bath.
04:46 But if you have an area such as your rib cage,
04:48 or chest area, abdominal area, back area...
04:52 these areas are not easily submerged locally,
04:56 and so you need to take a hot towel,
04:59 or fomentation cloth and apply it to that area,
05:02 and apply hot and cold having the same principles
05:05 as submerging in hot and cold water to a particular body part.
05:09 So let's say, I don't know, maybe I broke my ribs...
05:13 I ran into a tree, who knows, or something like that,
05:16 and then I have a lot of pain from that,
05:18 and I'm not breathing as deeply as I should,
05:20 and I start to develop bronchitis/pneumonia...
05:22 Would fomentations be a good treatment for that?
05:25 It's one of the best treatments.
05:26 Fomentations have a wonderful application in chest illnesses
05:33 such as asthma, bronchitis, and also chest injuries such as
05:39 rib cage injuries.
05:41 So, what would we do?
05:43 I mean, okay, should I hold my chest?
05:46 I ran into something... and, actually, I have broken
05:49 my ribs before, so I know how to do this... Right!
05:52 I'll be happy to show you here. Okay
05:55 I preface this one with a little story as well.
05:59 One of our Amish bishops in our area had a buggy accident.
06:04 And, one Saturday his son called our home just as
06:08 we were leaving for church...
06:10 And he said, "I know this is your Sunday;
06:12 this is your rest day, but my father has had this
06:17 severe rib injury, and now he seems to have pneumonia...
06:20 or something like that... He's coughing up very thick sputum
06:24 and it's very painful. "
06:26 "Is there any way you can see him today. "
06:29 ...And we assured him that there was!
06:32 So he came over to our place for a treatment,
06:34 and what we did is... for the treatment,
06:37 we put his feet in hot water to help in also decongesting
06:44 the chest area for the treatment,
06:46 and then we put some hot towels to his chest...
06:50 And I'm going to demonstrate to you how we heated
06:53 these towels, and how we did that.
06:55 You have a special pot here...
06:58 You can use any kind of pot at home. That's right!
07:01 Well, if we're in a society where you have a
07:04 microwave, the microwave actually is a very
07:10 nifty way to do that as well.
07:13 Let's take this towel for example...
07:15 This towel is just a dry towel, and I folded it widthwise
07:20 twice, and then I run it under the tap water
07:23 to get it completely wet.
07:25 And so, we'll pretend this is a wet towel, not a dry one.
07:29 Then I roll it up, and wring it out... so that it's
07:33 damp but not sloshy, or soggy.
07:37 And then, I simply put it in any
07:40 old plastic bag that I have around.
07:41 I save my grocery bags for such a purpose.
07:44 You need to put it in a bag though...
07:46 It's the best idea to put it in a bag,
07:49 and then I put it into my microwave, turn it on high
07:52 for anywhere from 4 to 8 minutes,
07:55 depending on the size of the towel and the microwave.
07:58 After it is heated, then I will apply it to the body area.
08:06 But say, if I go to an Amish home where I do not have
08:09 electricity, or some parts of the world where
08:11 those things aren't available, what do I do?
08:14 I bet ya, you're going to talk about the pot now.
08:16 The pot comes into play now!
08:19 You can use any large pot.
08:21 A canning kettle is perfect...
08:23 but not every one has a canning kettle,
08:26 or not even everyone has a little wire basket.
08:30 What you can do is get some kind of steamer,
08:33 and one thing I have done to make a steaming pot of
08:38 out of this is that I need to put some
08:42 water in this pot, about 1 or 2 inches' level...
08:46 Probably a little bit closer to 1-1/2 or so;
08:50 at least over an inch because you don't want
08:52 the pot to run dry while you're in the process of steaming
08:55 which will take about a 1/2 an hour.
08:57 What I have done actually... is I've made a little
09:00 improvision here.
09:01 This steaming apparatus for steaming vegetables is a
09:05 little bit low, and I want it a little higher,
09:07 so I took an aluminum pan, punched holes in it,
09:11 and put that upside-down in the bottom of the pot,
09:15 just to give it a little raising there...
09:19 And then I just put this little steamer contraption
09:23 right here, and you can use any type of wire convenience
09:30 ...Just enough to bring the level of the towel ABOVE
09:36 the water level because you want it just
09:38 to be steamed, not boiled.
09:40 Then you put your towel in there on in.
09:42 Yes, then you have your wet towel exactly like you did
09:46 for the microwave; you fold it, you wet it,
09:49 you wring it out, and then you have it just damp...
09:53 and you lay it right in here.
09:56 You can put anywhere from 1 to 3,
10:00 and often, I will put 3 in this canning kettle.
10:04 Then I will put it on the heat whether it's a wood stove,
10:08 or electric stove, it doesn't matter.
10:10 Within 30 minutes, usually, the steam will come up
10:14 and heat the towel.
10:16 Now, how do I get the towel from there to your chest?
10:20 That's a good question!
10:22 Well, you are going to demonstrate that today.
10:25 I aim to please... the doctor is in and so is the patient!
10:28 So my rib hurts though, so be easy on me. That's right!
10:32 And what we're going to do, because I don't have a
10:34 wool blanket here, often I put the hot towel within a
10:37 wool blanket to kind of regulate the heat a bit...
10:40 But since I don't have that, I am going to just triple
10:44 the layers here, and I'm going to put this dry towel
10:46 right over the area where I want to put this hot towel.
10:50 I would be laying down normally...
10:52 Normally, you'd be lying down, and you might even have
10:55 your feet in hot water to kind of even increase the
10:59 effectiveness of the treatment,
11:00 but you don't even have to do that.
11:02 Now, you can use the tongs, or you can use an oven mitt.
11:06 But since I don't have either one, I'm just going to
11:10 use a little pair of spoons here to lift this out
11:19 because it's quite hot.
11:22 I may lay it actually out on a table,
11:25 which I'm just going to pretend my lap is...
11:27 And I will lay it at one end, and actually roll it out
11:32 very quickly, and then very quickly, I would usually just
11:38 wrap this in a little wool blanket...
11:40 Since I don't have that, it's going to go right on there.
11:43 Okay, and I wouldn't really normally touch it,
11:45 but I'm going to today.
11:46 And, in order to keep it from losing much more heat,
11:51 I'm going to put a dry one right on top,
11:53 so it's like the hot filling of a sandwich again...
11:56 All right... there you go! How long is that good for?
11:59 Now, you're going to start to feel better quite soon.
12:03 It's going to relax the muscles, and it's going to kind of
12:06 bring the blood to the surface to decongest that area,
12:10 and we are going to leave that on for anywhere from
12:13 5 to 7 minutes.
12:15 Okay, so then what does it do?
12:19 It helps to decongest that area under which there is
12:25 an injury or an infection.
12:27 It brings blood to the area?
12:28 Yes, it brings blood to the surface area which
12:31 helps will decongest that area underneath there
12:33 where it helps to move the blood.
12:35 Again, it's causing a movement of our circulatory system
12:39 which takes away waste, and
12:41 brings in nutrients, and white blood cells.
12:43 How many times do you do this then?
12:44 We will leave that on... and another thing we will do
12:48 often which we won't demonstrate here with you since you were
12:51 bundled up once before with one of our treatments...
12:53 But we would normally have your feet in, say, a hot foot bath,
12:57 and we would cover you with a sheet, or a blanket so that
13:00 you could sweat in there, and that's another way to...
13:03 How do we close this off?
13:04 Well, now that it's getting comfortable,
13:06 we'll take it off. The whole thing?
13:08 We'll take the whole thing off.
13:09 We'll take this off, and then what we usually have
13:13 is a pan of cold water nearby.
13:18 We always seem to have to get that cold in-there don't we? Yes
13:21 And we'll pretend we have this pan of cold water,
13:23 and this is COLD, and often what we'll do
13:26 We'll take it, and make kind of a little mitt,
13:29 and we'll just lightly rub that area very briskly,
13:33 but gently because it's a little bit sore. It hurts!
13:36 And, we'll do that about a 1/2 a minute to a minute,
13:39 and then we will dry it off with another towel.
13:43 Just dry it off so that it's nice and dry here...
13:48 And now, we're ready for the second towel,
13:50 so we will again put this up here, the dry towel,
13:55 and this time, we may want to put this one back in to steam
14:00 if we need to, or we'll pick out another one,
14:03 and repeat that process for a total of about 4 to 5 changes.
14:08 ...4 to 5 changes, and then several times that day?
14:12 It can be done anywhere from 1 to 4 times a day,
14:15 and it can be continued until pain relief and healing
14:19 have begun there.
14:21 We're talking with Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus
14:24 and she's telling us that sometimes the simplest ways of
14:28 addressing issues are really the best and most effective.

15:37 Welcome back!
15:38 If you've just joined us, we've been talking about
15:39 the pharmacy in your kitchen,
15:41 and our pharmacy specialist is Dr. Mary Ann McNeilus
15:46 Looks like we actually are right now into the refrigerator
15:50 area, or right into the kitchen, and it looks like you have
15:52 what is this... a potato, an onion, some cabbage,
15:55 and various tools to lay those things away, if we need to.
15:59 What are these for?
16:00 What are we going to be doing now?
16:01 We're going to demonstrate some poultices that can be applied
16:05 to injured, or inflamed parts of our body that can be
16:11 very effective in the healing process.
16:13 So potato, is that what you're going to talk about first?
16:18 Let's look at the potato, and I've got my sleeves rolled up
16:20 here and my kitchen counter right on my lap!
16:23 All right great!
16:25 And we are going to look at the raw potato!
16:28 Potato poultices are used RAW and they can be used
16:34 just about anywhere for any condition.
16:37 They can be used for eye infections...
16:40 for red eye, inflamed eyes.
16:43 They can be used for burns, or injuries, or infected areas.
16:52 Pretty much the same places you can use charcoal.
16:56 So you just grate them up fine like this... Yes
16:58 The potato must be used raw, and it can simply be grated.
17:02 All right... you grate that. Can you make it bigger than that
17:07 Can you use that other bigger
17:09 section to grate them even larger?
17:10 Well this will certainly take quite a while... wouldn't it?
17:13 Let's see here; let's just for the sake of our...
17:16 But normally you'd do it small like that.
17:18 Smaller is probably better.
17:20 It will get more mushy, and juicy which is kind of
17:23 what you're looking for.
17:24 But mashed potatoes doesn't work.
17:26 No, hot mashed potatoes aren't quite what we're looking for
17:29 in this case. Okay
17:33 All right, so you grate that all up, and what are the
17:35 healing properties in a potato?
17:39 Well, you know, it seems like potato has a lot of
17:45 minerals such as potassium.
17:49 Other things that the Lord seems to have put into it
17:52 that we are actually just discovering
17:57 certainly have healing properties.
18:00 It seems like the mineral combinations
18:02 of magnesium, potassium things like that do have
18:05 properties that are able to promote healing process.
18:10 And, so what I want to do is show you how
18:14 I make a simple poultice...
18:16 I've gotten the raw potato...
18:18 Okay great... those look ready to go.
18:22 And this is a small poultice.
18:25 This can be, for example, for an eye infection...
18:27 So let's just make this a little bit smaller here.
18:31 I hope that the Food and Drug Administration is not watching.
18:33 They'll probably find some way to market this and sell it!
18:35 Well I tell you, that's one reason these ways
18:39 don't have a lot of market value because it's hard to
18:41 improve on God... isn't it, on some of these things!
18:46 So we put the little shavings of the potato inside a
18:49 piece of paper, or loose-fitting cloth, or a cheesecloth,
18:52 and then you can apply it to the infected body part.
18:55 Let's say it's my hand... Sure, we'll put it right there
18:58 or it can be a red eye, infected eye.
19:01 Best for eyes, huh? It's excellent for eyes!
19:03 And, my husband had a sore eye one day, not long ago
19:10 and we did a hot and cold contrast to his eye
19:13 and put the raw potato poultice right over
19:18 his eye; closed his eye, right over the eyelid over the eye.
19:22 He rested for about 30 minutes, and that was the end of
19:26 his inflamed red eye. Is that right?
19:28 Now, is this antiviral as well?
19:30 Well that's a good question.
19:31 It does seem to have properties that do help with burns
19:34 or infected areas as well.
19:36 It does seem to normalize some of those tissues,
19:40 and so there are things in the potato well that seem to
19:45 draw out or absorb in this case substances that are
19:52 toxic, and to promote healing of the tissues underneath it.
19:57 So you do a contrast bath, and then you can put this
19:59 poultice on... How long do you keep it on?
20:02 Similarly to a charcoal poultice
20:05 for several hours, or overnight.
20:07 All right, so then can you do the same thing with an onion?
20:11 Oh, we're going next to the cabbage maybe...
20:13 Well, let's take a look at a cabbage.
20:15 Cabbage is excellent for bruised edematous tissues.
20:21 For example, if you have turned your ankle,
20:24 sprained an ankle, or have fallen and have a severe bruise
20:29 that's very painful and swollen.
20:31 It is also good for breastfeeding mothers
20:38 who have, maybe, what we call a mastitis or inflammation
20:41 or congestion of the breast tissue.
20:44 And, this type of treatment is excellent for that.
20:50 And how you do the cabbage is simply...
20:53 You can chop it up, or cut it up a bit, and then
20:58 take pieces of wax paper, or we can simply use the
21:04 plastic like we did here, and put it between the
21:08 cut-up pieces between the plastic,
21:10 and then just roll it with a rolling pin.
21:13 Or, blend it a bit in a food processor, whatever you have...
21:17 Or, mash it up a bit until it's kind of bruised and juicy
21:22 and moist.
21:24 And then it does its magic. It does!
21:26 And you simply can put it in a loose-fitting cloth
21:28 or paper towel... the same as you did the potato.
21:30 Again, the raw cabbage is best used in this situation.
21:34 I can't wait to try it... you don't want to get sick,
21:37 but I'm almost looking forward to trying some of these things!
21:40 They are a lot of fun; I've had a chance to try this too.
21:42 This is the onion which has a lot of good properties,
21:45 and I'll share a few of these with you.
21:47 First of all, we're going to get out the Kleenex here
21:49 for our eyes, because I am going to cut this onion,
21:52 and I'm not sure how hot it is.
21:53 I just purchased it this morning.
21:56 Now, the onion has a lot of excellent properties as well.
22:01 There was, a while back, croup and whooping cough went through
22:07 our Amish community, and a lot of children were whooping,
22:10 and there are different times in the springtime when viral
22:14 croup syndrome comes around, and we have even small babies
22:18 and toddlers coughing, and carrying on...
22:22 And what can we do for them?
22:24 And certainly one of the fine things that can be done
22:29 for them is to cut up, or grate up onion the same way
22:35 we grated the raw potato.
22:37 With our little grater here, we can grate it, or mash it up
22:40 and I will just pretend that I did that.
22:42 And then we will place our grated onion again
22:47 in a loosely woven cloth or a paper towel,
22:51 and then we can put it either on the chest,
22:55 or sometimes even for earaches, it can be put to the ear.
23:01 It has good properties in it.
23:03 Is it a vasodilator?
23:04 Well, it tends to have properties in it that tend to
23:09 be more of a relaxant, and so that in cases
23:17 where there is swelling and edema from a viral croup,
23:19 or from asthma, it tends to relax those smooth muscles.
23:22 It does also have some antibacterial properties
23:26 that are similar to antibiotic properties and can be used
23:34 for boils or abscesses as well.
23:37 But one that I really like to use it for is for
23:39 croup in small babies.
23:41 And I will often just take the grated up onion,
23:49 and will just simply put it right next to the bare skin
23:53 on the chest, and then just take a piece of plastic
23:57 to cover that because, of course, the onion is
24:00 good and juicy, mushy there.
24:02 Doesn't make the baby cry, does it?
24:04 Surprisingly, it doesn't seem to that much.
24:07 Babies do a little bit better.
24:09 And then we can take a towel or some type of
24:11 a heavier cloth, and cover that, and pin it securely
24:15 in place, so that it can stay on the baby's chest,
24:18 and often that will be... How long?
24:21 For several hours, or overnight.
24:23 Have you used any of these things in the mission field?
24:25 Have you ever used a poultice or different things
24:27 in the mission field?
24:28 Yes, I have had opportunity on numerous occasions,
24:32 but I would like to share with you one particular
24:34 story that stands out in my mind.
24:37 One day, a poor Cambodian widow lady brought her
24:41 12 to 13-year-old boy to me with what appeared
24:46 to be quite a serious condition.
24:48 He had been sick for several days.
24:50 In fact, he had not been able to keep his food down
24:53 well for several days.
24:55 And by the time she brought him to me,
24:57 his left eye was SO swollen that it was actually
25:03 pushing out of the orbit of the socket of the eye.
25:06 His eye was so affected that he couldn't even keep food down.
25:09 That's right, and he was nauseated.
25:13 He was vomiting from some irritation in the brain.
25:20 And, by the time I saw him, his eye was actually protruding
25:24 a bit out of the eye socket, and pointing downward...
25:27 And, he could not see.
25:30 When I asked him if he could count my fingers,
25:32 he could not see a thing.
25:33 I asked him where he hurt, and he pointed to the ENTIRE
25:38 left side of his head.
25:40 I realized his illness was, indeed, a serious situation...
25:46 that the inflammation could have well already traveled down the
25:51 optic nerve and this illness can cause a brain abscess,
25:56 or meningitis.
25:58 And yet the poor mother had no money.
26:01 The hospitals were very marginally supplied at that
26:04 time, and I said to her, "Do you want to see what God
26:08 can do with His simple things?" And she said, "YES"
26:11 That was my clue to work with him,
26:15 and with a prayer in my heart, I put his feet
26:19 in a hot foot bath.
26:20 I put hot and cold towels to the entire left side of his head...
26:26 for about 3 to 5 changes, hot and cold,
26:30 and then I put a LARGE charcoal poultice covering the left eye
26:35 and the entire left side of his head.
26:39 After we put this on, he was able to rest for the evening.
26:44 Several hours after he had rested, he woke up
26:47 actually feeling better, was able to eat an orange,
26:50 and actually keep it down.
26:52 The next morning when I checked his eyesight,
26:56 I found that he could actually count my fingers;
27:00 not well, but he could see enough to count fingers.
27:04 At that point, I let him go home with his mother
27:07 under the direction of one of our lay pastors who was
27:11 well-trained in natural remedies.
27:14 The mother continued the hot and cold water treatments,
27:18 and the charcoal poultices for another 2 weeks.
27:20 At the end of 2 weeks, I received a welcome letter...
27:23 that the young man was now pain-free,
27:26 and could now see well.
27:27 And this is a picture of him. Yes
27:30 That is just incredible.
27:32 That was really a miracle wasn't it? It truly was.
27:34 Well, it also was you stepping out in faith,
27:37 and using God's healing way,
27:41 you know, cautiously, and yet courageously.
